Grand Opening of ‘.com/.cn’, ‘Image Core Sample’, ‘Performing Dramas’ and ‘New Orient Garden’, Contemporary Art Shows Presented by K11 Art Foundation

28 Nov 2017

K11 Art Foundation (KAF)’s art exhibitions .com/.cn, Image Core Sample, Performing Dramas, and New Orient Garden opened at the chi K11 art museum in Shanghai in the beginning of November! It is always the mission of the KAF to foster the development of contemporary Chinese art by providing young artists, curators, and other art practitioners with a platform for idea exchange. These four exhibitions are the fruits of the KAF’s long-term collaboration with international art organisations and well-known curators. Not only do the exhibits show us the professional practices of contemporary artists, but they also manifest these artists’ observations of, and reflections upon, socio-cultural phenomena. Participating artists and curators of the exhibitions met art lovers at the opening ceremony, sharing their thoughts and experiences with everyone on this special occasion.

Image Core Sample

Video and photography from the collection of Adrian Cheng

Image Core Sample is a manifesto as well as a celebration of the private collection of Adrian Cheng, Founder and Honorary Chairman of the KAF, focusing on Chinese contemporary photography and video art from 1990 to 2014, which includes the works by Chen Wei, Cheng Ran, Guan Xiao, Li Ming, Liu Chuang, Qiu Zhi jie, and Yang Fudong. Extending the subject matter explored in the exhibition .com/.cn, Image Core Sample investigates the various processes of image making in the pre-Internet and post-Internet eras. The imposing array of images demonstrates the diverse forms of the canon of Chinese contemporary art, and sheds light on the tremendous transformation of the mentality of the Chinese society over the past 20 years.

Performing Dramas

Screening of short films by contemporary artists

Last year, the KAF and Centre Pompidou announced that Yung Ma was appointed to be a curator at Centre Pompidou and was entrusted with the undertaking of a series of research projects on contemporary art. Performing Dramas – co-presented by the two institutions and curated by Yung Ma was first presented at Centre Pompidou in May and June this year. Performing Dramas explores the idea of the ‘performative’ in moving images through the video works by Fang Lu, Hao Jingban, Li Liao, Li Ran, Ma Qiusha, Tao Hui, and Ming Wong. More specifically, it examines how dramatic scenarios reflect the increasingly complex histories and multiple realities. The exhibited works show how moving images shift fluidly between differing dials of fiction, documentary, melodrama, comedy, and tragedy. In the process, they reinterpret our perception of the world we live in today.

New Orient Garden

Solo exhibition of Adrian Wong

Evolving from The Tiger Returns to the Mountain, Adrian Wong’s last exhibition in Hong Kong, New Orient Garden investigates the psychological struggles that diaspora communities in megacities face as they search for cultural authenticity. This exhibition takes as its starting point a cement tiger once situated at Tiger Balm Garden in Hong Kong, drawing visual references from, for instance, the décor of a Chinese restaurant. A ‘garden’ like this functions as a critique of our infatuation with Orientalism; it also encourages viewers to contemplate the past while imagining a shared future.

The four exhibitions will run till 3 Jan 2018. All are welcome!
