NWS Geo Hero Run

02 Dec 2017

NWS Holdings and the Association for Geoconservation, Hong Kong, are celebrating a milestone in their
decade-long joint effort to promote geoconservation. The NWS Hong Kong Geo Wonders Hike programme has
involved more than 30,000 members of the public in a wide array of activities since its inception in 2008. The
NWS Geo Hero Run, the flagship event of the 10th NWS Hong Kong Geo Wonders Hike programme, was held
on 2 December in Sai Kung with over 1,500 runners racing through the world-renowned Hong Kong UNESCO
Global Geopark. In addition to a half marathon and a 10km race, the NWS Geo Hero Run incorporated a
charity run, which this year was completed by 180 beneficiaries from 15 local non-profit organisations, and our
corporate volunteers.

To further promote our geoconservation message to the public, two free guided public tours were held in
December, featuring Hong Kong’s abandoned mine in Ma On Shan, and the centuries-old Hakka Village in
Lai Chi Wo. Recommended Geopark Guides and graduates of the Young Ambassadors for Geoconservation
Training Programme served as guides on the tours. These tours attracted about 1,000 people to learn about
the geological features of Hong Kong.

To make the campaign itself more environmentally sensitive, new measures were adopted at the NWS Geo
Hero Run to reduce waste. Paper cups were replaced with reusable cups at water stations, and recyclables
were collected and sent to a community recycling centre.
